The following questions were submitted by interested parties via email subsequent to OAA publishing the online FAQ. The @sk Oxford Forum is the preferred venue for such queries so that all applicants can benefit from additional information about the MPL programme:
Q:
I have a quick query regarding the advertised Flybe training scheme advertised on your website. Is it likely there will be further identical programmes open for application in, for example, 12 months time? Is it possible to apply to the current programme on a referred entry basis?
A:
We have no way of knowing if FlyBe will conduct a similar course next year; however, this is the second year running that they have done so with OAA and they have a good track record of offering cadet seats. It is not possible to request a deferred entry, so those who are not yet 18 or lack other eligibility criteria should not apply at this time.
Q:
I am going through the online application form for the Flybe MPL and I have a ‘Vocational Foundation Degree’ in Youth Leadership & Training awarded by City & Guilds (CVQO was the provider). I am Currently doing the next stage on from this which will hopefully result in a vocational Honours Degree. Where in your opinion should I place this on the form? I also have a number of Police qualifications/Awards are these worth putting in or are they none recognizable things? Where should they be placed?
A:
If you can document for us that the City and Guilds, UCAS or CVQO rank these as equal to GCSEs or A-levels, then that is where they should go on the application form. If they are not considered equal to GCSEs or A-levels by an accrediting body, then put them in the third essay at the bottom of the application. Put the police awards in the third essay as well. It is there as a catch all box since there will be many cases that don’t fit into the standard UK education system parameters to which we designed the application form.
Q:
If I get a JAA Medical Class I from Greece (JAA country) from an authorized JAA Aeromedical Doctor is it going to be accepted by OAA and Flybe or I must obtain it from U.K. only no matter what?
A:
A non UK medical is fine for starting the course, but it will need to be converted to a UK CAA issued medical before you can receive the license. Rules require the medical to be from the same aviation authority issuing the license for all countries in the JAA (EU). Don’t worry about this detail for now, as I will tell the successful applicants how to do this later on.
Q:
I am not from the UK. If I pass all the selection stages, am I going to be eligible to apply for a loan from a U.K. bank, BBVA, without restrictions like I must be U.K. resident plus having property in Great Britain in order to secure the loan? I have already tried to get a loan from Greece but is not possible.
A:
BBVA require three years residency, either EU citizenship or UK Indefinite Leave to Remain and a UK property as security for the loan.
Q:
Is there any chance a cadet who is not a U.K. citizen but a European one to be selected by OAA - Flybe for the 2009 MPL Pilot Training Scheme? Is there any non U.K. student that is working currently towards the 2008 MPL programme?
A:
There was no MPL program in 2008. Neither OAA nor our partner airlines discriminate against non-UK residents. We currently or recently have had cadets from Norway, Sweden, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Ireland, Czech Republic and probably a few others my memory fails to retrieve just now.
Q:
Apart from the simulator training in Stockholm, is any of the MPL course completed in Phoenix like the ATPL? From what I've seen reading around the FAQ's it seems to all be based in Oxford apart from the time in Stockholm.
A:
The flybe cadets will not train in Arizona. They will get all 85 hours of the aircraft instruction in the UK. If we did it in the US, they would have no experience of UK airspace, ATC or radio calls before they start carrying passengers. They will complete Type Theory and 20 hours in the OAA Q400 FSTD in Stockholm and do the Type FSTD training at Exeter with flybe.
