colour blindness???

Postby wanttofly on Mon Feb 01, 2010 12:51 pm

hi all,

I am hoping to apply to oxford academy but I am worried about the medical.

I have never considered myself to be colourblind up until doing some more research on becoming an airline pilot.

I tried the colour blindness test online (the one with the coloured dots and you see the number) but I am struggling with some of the greener shades.

When I was at the airport recently i was testing myself with the runway lights, green blue red white etc and i could see them fine.

I am so worried though, how bad does the situation got to be before they fail you on?

I would really appreciate some information as to ease my anxiety!

thank you

If you fail the test with colored dots (Ishihara Plate Test), they will test you with colored lights. It sounds like you may be able to cope fine with a lantern test.

I suggest that you book in for the Class 1 Medical ASAP before you get your hopes up only to have them dashed or before you worry yourself to death needlessly. Only the CAA can make the decision, so let them make it before you spend too much energy on this.

Read the sticky post called How to Obtain a UK CAA Class 1 Medical.

True enough! I apparently failed my int. colour test so I had the lantern test. Although subsequent tests of the one I failed have been fine and i've never had any problems when flying, apart from trying to land upside down & going backwards of course.

Just a thought on the medical though, before spending a lot of money getting the medical, you could always get a class 2 to check the colour issue as this is a lot cheaper and you can get it from any AME around the country or even just ask an AME to do a colour test only!

Or just go to the opticians and ask ;) They did it for me when I went for a regular checkup!!
